Application of PRP after arthroscopic cuff repair yielded structural, clinical healing

Pandey and his colleagues randomly assigned 102 patients with medium-sized and large-degenerative posterosuperior cuff tears that underwent arthroscopic repair to the PRP injection group, who received 8 mL of PRP, or the control group. Researchers used clinical scores and ultrasound to assess retear and vascularity pattern of the cuff in all patients.

Steroid versus Platelet-Rich Plasma in Ultrasound-Guided Sacroiliac Joint Injection for Chronic Low Back Pain.

back.jpg

Forty patients with chronic low back pain diagnosed with SIJ pathology were randomly allocated into 2 groups. Group S received 1.5 mL methylprednisolone (40 mg/mL) and 1.5 mL 2% lidocaine with 0.5 mL saline, while Group P received 3 mL leukocyte-free PRP with 0.5 mL calcium chloride into ultrasound-guided SIJ injection. Visual analog scale (VAS) scores, Modified Oswestry Disability Questionnaire (MODQ) scores, Short Form (SF-12) Health Survey scores, and complications (if any) were evaluated at 2 weeks, 4 weeks, 6 weeks, and 3 months.

Combination of platelet-rich plasma and bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells enhances tendon–bone healing

The in vitro study revealed that collagen I, osteocalcin, and osteopontin expression was higher in BMSCs co-cultured with PRP for 14 days. The in vivo study revealed a more mature tendon–bone interface using light microscopy, a more newly formed bone at the bone tunnel walls detected by micro-computed tomography, and a significantly higher failure load as assessed by biomechanical testing in the BMSC + PRP group than in the control and PRP groups.

The single protein injection which could replace the need for knee surgery for osteoarthritis sufferers

A single injection of protein harvested from a patient’s own blood may replace the need for knee surgery for osteoarthritis sufferers.

The new 20-minute procedure sees blood drawn from the patient’s arm, separated in a centrifuge, after which part of the fluid is then injected into the arthritic knee.
